Victor Frankenstein is a good idea to execution fails because McGuigan never finds a way to make a film with itself again. Even what the director poses as a novelty to give a modern twist to an old story, it is something that has already been done on other occasions and here feels quite simply an imitation. Daniel Radcliffe and James McAvoy have been able to have better roles, but in a mediocre film are as worthy of rescue. Among interesting topics to explore means and a romantic subplot that does not work, it is not very difficult to get bored. This tries to counter with some scenes of action and adventure you will never feel like part of the film, and only add more confusion to a story that never seems to be clear about what it wants to be or have. Daniel Radcliffe and James McAvoy undoubtedly have good chemistry together and also make interesting characters separately. Radcliffe as a vulnerable being that just opens the world after spending years locked in a circus and McAvoy as a doctor who slowly descends by a spiral of obsession and madness. Both delivered good performances helped by a script that takes its time developing these characters, maybe too much sometimes and neglecting other things. Unfortunately we can not say the same of the antagonist of the story, the inspector Inspector Turpin played by Andrew Scott, a character who is halfway despite having some of the most interesting conflict posed by the film, because his motivation is faith in God but never thoroughly explores the dilemma of religion against science. Even worse is what happens with Lorelei (Jessica Brown Findlay), the romantic interest of Igor, who is completely relegated to the history and even works as a barrier between the doctor and his assistant, something that arises at first but is promptly forgotten.
